    Abstract:

Polyethylene glycol(PEG)/montmorillonite composites were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectrum and differential thermal analysis. The results showed that there were 1 or 2 layers of PEG lying flat between the montmorillonite plates. PEG entered the lamellae by replacing part of the inter-lamellar water. Polyethylene glycol of higher molecular weight showed stronger interaction with the surface of montmorillonite plates.
